Roger Williams establishes the Providence settlement after he was banished by the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his beliefs in separation of church and state. Anne Hutchinson founds Portsmouth after she is banished by Massachusetts for her views of freedom of religion.
Providence and Portsmouth joins together and forms the Rhode Island Colony, the 5th permanent settlement.
Connecticut Colony founded by Thomas Hooker and Massachusetts colonists. Number 6 of the original 13 colonies.

Dutch Peter Minuit and the New Sweden Company establishe New Sweden in New Netherland. King Charles II of England renames it to the Delaware Colony, the 7th original colony.

New Hampshire becomes part of Massachusetts.

Virginians settle the 8th colony; the North Carolina Colony.

Dutch seize the Delaware Colony.

King Charles II issues for settling the South Carolina Colony: the 9th of the original 13 colonies.

Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret establish the 10th original colony; the New Jersey Colony in New Netherland.
The brother of King Charles II, James the Duke of York, founds the New York Colony, the 11th original colony.
