March 31 - April 1 International Donor Conference on Afghan Reconstruction in Berlin, Germany.
April U.S. Offensive near the Pakistan border against al-Qaida.
October 9 Presidential elections. Hamid Karzai is elected.
December 7 Inauguration of Hamid Karzai as first democratically-elected Afghan President.

May 23 U.S. and Afghanistan formalize Strategic Partnership. Alleged prisoner abuse by U.S. forces in detention centres.
June 1 Suicide bomber kills 20 in a mosque in Kandahar.
September 18 National Assembly and Provincial Council elections.
December 19 Inaugural session of the National Assembly in Kabul.

January 31 - February 1 International Donor Conference on Afghanistan in London.
May Anti-U.S. protests in Kabul.
May - June Operation Mountain Thrust. Afghan and coalition forces offensive against Taliban fighters in the south. Taliban attack and raids against the international troops.
July NATO takes over the command of military operations in the south.
August 3 Suicide bomber kills 21 when he attacks a NATO convoy in Kandahar.

August U.N. reports record high opium production.
November Suicide bomber kills 41 in Baghlan, among them members of parliament.
December Two E.U. and U.N. envoys are expelled, accused of contacting the Taliban.
