The father of Afghan independence, leader of the Ghilzai Afghans Mir Wais Khan Hotak, conquers Kandahar.
Mirwais Khan dies. His son Mir Mahmud Hotaki rules.
Mir Mahmud Hotaki frees Herat from the Persians, captures Persian capital Isfahan, and declares himself Shah of Persia.
Mir Mahmud Hotaki is killed. His cousin Ashraf Khan succeeds him.
September 29 Battle of Damghan: Persian Nadir Shah defeats Ashraf Khan.
Nadir Shah occupies Southwestern Afghanistan.
Nadir Shah conquers Kandahar.
Nadir Shah is killed.
Ahmad Shah Abdali succeeds Nadir Shah, and establish the Islamic Durrani empire, considered to be the birth of modern Afghanistan.
Timur Shah rules. Kabul becomes the nations capital city. And it will stay the main town till the end of this Afghanistan history timeline.
Zaman Shah rules.
Mahmood rules.
Shah Shujah rules, and signs a treaty of alliance with the United Kingdom.
Shuja Shah is overthrowned by his brother Mahmood Shah Durrani War with Persia.
Civil War.
Dost Mohammad Khan establishes control.
Persians attack Herat unsucessfully.
Sikhs conquer Peshawar.
First Anglo-Afghan War. British troops invade Afghanistan. The British reinstate Shah Shuja to the throne.
January Massacre of Elphinstone's Army: 16,000 British troops are wiped out by Afghans. Shah Shuja is killed.
Afghanistan becomes independent. Dost Mohammad Khan returns from exile and rules.
Dost Mohammad Khan signs a peace treaty with India.
Afghanistan declares war on Persia.
Sher Ali succeeds his father Dost Mohammad Khan.
Mohammad Afzal defeats Sher Ali by conquering Kabul, he dies a year later.
Mohammad Azam succeeds Mohammad Afzal.
Sher Ali reasserts control.
Russia states to respect the territorial integrity of Afghanistan.
January Second Anglo-Afghan War. The British occupy Kabul, but face strong resistance.
Amir Muhammad Yaqub Khan succeeds Sher Ali, and signs the Treaty of Grandamak in which he cedes Afghan territories to the U.K.
