- 2003 | January U.N. imposes further sanctions on Taliban. March Taliban destroy ancient historical sites in Ghazni and blow up the giant Buddha statues in Bamiyan. April Northern Alliance leader Ahmad Shah Masood gather support against the Taliban in Europe. September 9 Ahmad Shah Masood is assassinated. September 11 Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida organization attacks New York, Washington, Pennsylvania, killing thousands of people. October 7 Operation Enduring Freedom. U.S. and British forces launch airstrikes against Taliban targets, after they refuse to hand over Osama bin Laden. November 13 The Northern Alliance seize Mazar-e Sharif and Kabul. Taliban flee to Kandahar. December 5 - 6 U.N. Conference on the future of Afghanistan in Bonn, Germany. Transitional Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and ISAF (International Assistance Force in Afghanistan) formed. December 7 Taliban-leaders surrender in Kandahar. 22 December U.S.-backed Hamid Karzai sworn in as Chairman of Afghan Interim Authority.

June 10-16 Loya Jirga or Grand Assembly on Afghanistan's future. June 13 Hamid Karzai appointed President of the Transitional Authority. July Vice-President Haji Abdul Qadir assassinated. October Constitutional Commission starts drafting a constitution. December First Provincial Reconstruction Team.
Peacekeeping forces enter the country.
March US Offensive against al-Qaida members and Taliban fighters in Kandahar. August NATO peacekeepers take control of security in Kabul. December 14 Constitutional Loya Jirga considers a new Afghan constitution.
