On his fourth journey, Amerigo discovers the island of South George and Bahia. They lost the flagship on a reef off of Ascension before reaching Brazil. Amerigo creates a trading agency at Cape Frio for Brazilian wood. It was located precisely on the Tropic of Cancer.

Returns to Lisbon at the end of his fourth voyage.

Becomes a citizen of Spain. He marries Maria Cerezo.

There is some controversy here. Some claim that Amerigo made two more voyages with Juan de la Cosa. Little is known of these voyages. Others claim he never sailed again after his fourth voyage.

The first map using the name America for the New World is printed. The map was made by German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller. In his next version of the map seven years later, Waldseemuller removed the name, but it had stuck.

Is made Piloto Mayor, or Chief Pilot, of Spain on August 6.

Dies on February 22 in Seville, Spain, of malaria.
