April 15 Mujahideen leader Ahmad Shah Masood seizes Kabul and declare the Islamic State of Afghanistan, headed by the Islamic Jihad Council.
Burhanuddin Rabbani President.
Mullah Omar forms a Islamic Taliban militia that revolts against Rabbani. Mujahideen warlords Dostum and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar continued to fight too against Rabbani.
Taliban militia rises to power and enforce hardline versions of Islamic laws.
May Osama Bin Laden moves from Sudan to Afghanistan. September Taliban militia seize Kabul and declare the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Rabbani joins the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance of Hezbi-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. Human rights violations by the Taliban reported.
Taliban execute Najibullah. The Northern Alliance and southern resistance groups - among them Hamid Karzai - continue to fight the Taliban.
February Earthquake in northeast Afghanistan kills over 4,000 people. August Taliban finally capture Mazar-i-Sharif. August 20 U.S. President Bill Clinton orders cruise missile attacks against bases of Osama bin Laden's in the Khost region, as a reaction on al-Qaida's bombings of two American embassies in Africa. September Iran sends 70,000 troops to the Afghan border after the Taliban killed Iranian diplomats in Mazar-i-Sharif.
February Earthquake in eastern Afghanistan affects over 30,000 people. September Former King Mohammad Zahir Shah calls for a Loya Jirga or grand assembly to discuss peace. October U.N. Security Council adopts Resolution 1267, air embargo and financial sanctions to force the Taliban to hand over Osama bin Laden.
May Taliban kill civilians in the Robatak Pass. September Taliban capture Taloqan. December U.N. Security Council adopts Resolution 1333, additional trade and economic sanctions against the Taliban.
