| Kee Games brand eliminated. Nolan Bushnell buys the Pizza Time Theatre restaurant for $500,000 and creates franchises of Chuck E. Cheese.
Atari introduces their Personal Computer Systems 400 and 800 at the Winter CES in Las Vegas. Founder Bushnell departs the company. Atari releases cabinet games of Video Pinball, Superman, Hercules, Basketball, Baseball, Subs, Lunar Lander, and Asteroids. The VCS gets Superman, Bowling, Canyon Bomber, Sky Diver, Backgammon, Casino, Human Cannonball, Miniature Golf, Video Chess, Football, BASIC Programming and Adventure. Atari makes four of the top ten coin games of 1979.
Significant Atari releases include Space Invaders and Championship Soccer (also known as Pele's Soccer) for the VCS. Space Invaders marks the first licensed title arrangement in the video game industry. Atari licensed the game from Taito. It becomes the first "killer app" for the VCS. Major personnel changes occur in many management positions in the company. Significant Atari cabinet games include Missile Command, Battlezone, Centipede, and Asteroids Deluxe. Atari launches its Atari Program Exchange (APX), which is a user-written software distribution unit.
Significant Atari releases include Super Breakout and Pac-Man for the VCS. Pac-Man is titled by Namco and sublicensed through Bally Midway. Significant coin operated games released include Dig Dug, Millipede, and Pole Position. Atari announces the new 5200 Home Entertainment System. It costs $299.95 and come with 10 game cartridges, four more to be available for the holidays. Titles for this new system include Missile Command, Pac-Man, Super Breakout, Star Raiders, Space Invaders, Baseball, Football, Soccer, Qix, Galaxian and Centipede.
