Thomas Hunt Morgan, an American biologist, showed with Alfred Sturtevant that genes could be found on chromosomes. They experimented with fruit flies to learn more about sex chromosomes and made the discovered the X and Y chromosomes, sex-linked traits and what happens when genes cross over.

Wilhelm Ludvig Johannsen of Denmark proposes that each section of a chromosome that is in control of a phenotype should be called a gene. Gene is Greek for "to give birth to."

Alfred Sturtevant begins constructing a chromosomal map for fruit flies. It was later completed in 1951.

Hermann Joseph Muller did more experiments with fruit flies, discovering many mutations.

George W. Beadle and Edward L. Tatum of the United States discover that genes control things like the production of enzymes.

Oswald Avery of the United States announces that DNA is the only substance responsible for heredity.

Francis Crick of Britain and James Watson of the US make a model of the DNA molecule. They prove that genes are responsible for heredity.

Crick and Watson, along with Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin start a new scientific branch known as molecular biology.
