Clarissa Harlowe Barton is born in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Her parents are Sarah Stone and Stephen Barton.

Attends local schools and home schooling.

Cares for her brother David, who has been injured after he fells from a roof.

Takes lessons and courses to become a teacher.

Starts as teacher in district schools near Oxford, Massachusetts.

Founds a school for the workers and their children of her brothers' mill.

Sister Dorothea or Dolly dies.

Attends courses at Clinton Liberal Institute, Oneida County, New York.

Mother Sarah dies.

Resumes her work as school teacher.

Founds the first public school in Bordentown, New Jersey.

Moves to Washington, D.C. Becomes the first woman clerk at the U. S. Patent Office.
