The Ellington Band continues a run of incredible music, including Take the A-Train and Chelsea Bridge.

Duke wins the Downbeat Poll. He and the band record Sentimental Lady, Perdido, and Blue Mist.

Duke begins a series of annual concerts at Carnegie Hall. Ben Webster leaves the band.

Duke wins the Downbeat Poll for the second time. Cat Anderson joins the band.

Duke wins the Esquire Gold Award for bandleader and arranger. He also wins the Metronome Poll. Oscar Pettiford joins the band. Duke records Perfume Suite.

Duke Ellington by Barry Ulanov, hits the bookstores. Duke wins the Esquire Gold Award and the Downbeat Poll again. Russell Procope joins the band.

Duke records Billy Strayhorn's Progressive Gavotte.

Duke tours France and England. He wins the Downbeat Poll again, even though the band's popularity is on the decline. Ben Webster rejoins the Ellington band briefly before leaving again in 1949.
