Edward Kennedy Ellington, later known as Duke, is born at the home of his paternal grandparents. Duke is delivered by a midwife on April 29 in Washington, D. C. His parents are Daisy Kennedy Ellington and James Edward Ellington.

Duke begins to take piano lessons from Mrs. Clinkscales, though he preferred baseball at the time.

Duke got his first job: selling peanuts at Washington Senators' baseball games. He had to overcome stage fright.

Duke begins to frequent pool halls and burlesque theatres. Duke begins school at the Armstrong Manual Training School to study commercial art instead of academics. He received his nickname, Duke from a school friend who admired his regal air. He began listening to ragtime pianists in Washington, D. C., Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Duke met a pianist named Harvey Brooks. He learned some tricks of piano playing from him, and made the decision to become a musician. Louis Brown and Oliver Doc Perry showed Duke how to read music and helped him develop his skills. Duke began playing at some of the local cafes and clubs around the Washington, D. C. area. He dropped out of school three months before graduation to begin his musical career. Duke formed his first group: The Duke's Serenaders.
