Jamaican-born British nurse Mary Jane Seacole. She establishes a boarding house for disabled veterans of the Crimean War.

African American nurse Bridget Mason.

Henry Dunant founds the International Committee of the Red Cross in Switzerland.

Florence Nightingale establishes the Nightingale Training School.

Sally Louisa Tompkins sets up the Robertson Hospital for Confederate troops after the Battle of Manassas in the American Civil War.

First registration law for nurses in North Carolina.

The Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses and the United States Navy Nurse Corps are established.
