Jamaican-born British nurse Mary Jane Seacole. She establishes a boarding house for disabled veterans of the Crimean War. African American nurse Bridget Mason. Henry Dunant founds the International Committee of the Red Cross in Switzerland. Florence Nightingale establishes the Nightingale Training School. Sally Louisa Tompkins sets up the Robertson Hospital for Confederate troops after the Battle of Manassas in the American Civil War. Jane Currie Blaikie Hoge. She is nursing for the Union Army in the Civil War. Agnes Gwendoline Hunt, the first orthopaedic nurse. Lillian Wald, she starts community nursing a form of public health nursing. Everywhere in the U.S training schools open their doors, for example in Boston. America's First Trained Nurse Linda Richards graduates. Mary Mahoney becomes the first black professional nurse in the U.S. American Red Cross is founded by Clara Barton. The nursing journal The Nightingale published for the first time. U.S. Congress vote for a Hospital Corps. Schools for nursing are opened in New York and Pennsylvania. The American Nurses Association ANA is founded. The International Council of Nurses is established. American Journal of Nursing published for the first time. State nursing associations start to form unions. The Army Nurse Corps is founded. First registration law for nurses in North Carolina. The Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses and the United States Navy Nurse Corps are established.
