The German steelhulled five masted ship-rigged windjammer Preussen is built.
William Hamilton builds the four masted steel Kurt - now called Moshulu - in Scotland. Now a floating restaurant in Philadelphia. Most windjammers in the history of sailboat timeline are museum, this is an exception.
Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt, formerly the Reserve Sonderburg, is built by the German Werft AG Weser in Bremen. Now flagship of the German Sailtraining Foundation. The four masted merchant vessel Barque Viking or Barken Viking is built by Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen, Denmark. Now preserved by Sweden. The Newport Bermuda Race is founded as the first ocean race for amateur sailors in normal boats. The Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii ocean race is created by Hawaiian King Kalakaua.
The four masted barque Peking is constructed in Hamburg, Germany by Blohm & Voss.
The three-masted barque rigged Statsraad Lehmkuhl is built as a training vessel for the German merchant marine as Grossherzog Friedrich August. Now in use as training ship for the Royal Norwegian Navy.
First aerodynamics designs for increasing speed.
The four masted steel barque STS Sedov, aka Magdalene Vinnen II and Kommodore Johnsen, is launched as cargo ship. Now a sail training vessel for the Russian Army.
The Russian four masted tall ship Krusenstern is built in Bremerhaven-Wesermünde, Germany, originally named the Padua.
Echevarrieta y Larrinaga shipyard in Cadiz, Spain constructs the four masted topsail, steel-hulled schooner, named after Spanish explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano, captain of the fleet of explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Now in use as a training ship for the Royal Spanish Navy.

The Italian Navy Shipyard designs the full rigged three masted steel hull Amerigo Vespucci tall ship.
The three mast barque Gorch Fock I, formerly known as Tovarishch and Gorch Fock, is launched as Kriegsmarine school ship. Now a museum ship in Stralsund, Germany.
