Thomas Edison's UK company merged with Joseph Swan's to form the Edison & Swan United Co., otherwise known as Edi-swan. Joseph Swan sells his United States patent rights to the Brush Electric Company.
The American Electric Company changes its name to the Thomson-Houston Electric Company.
Sawyer & Man Electric Company founded by Albon Man a year after William Edward Sawyer dies.
The Westinghouse Electric Company is founded by George Westinghouse. W. H. Lawrence, an executive with the Brush Electric Company, founds the National Carbon Company. The Sawyer & Man Electric Company is bought out by Thomson-Houston Electric Company.
The United States Electric Lighting Company was bought by Westinghouse.
Brush Electric Company is bought out by Thomson-Houston Electric Company. Edison Electric Light Company is consolidated into the Edison General Electric Company.
