Ancient peoples leave behind cave art, rock paintings and evidence of their everyday life that currently date back 500,000 years ago.

Civilization begins in the Indus Valley.

The cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro are established in the Indus Valley.

The Indus Valley civilization declines. Traditional Dravidians establish themselves in the south.

Aryans from the west invade India and drive out the Dravidians.

Iron tools are used by the Indo-Aryans.

Hinduism is established.

Sixteen Great States, known as Mahajanapadas, are ruled by the Indo-Aryans. They stretch from the Indus to the Ganges.

The caste system begins with the Brahmans becoming the highest class.

The Upanishads are written in the Sanskrit language.

The Magadha region in the northeast of India is conquered by Bimbisara of Bihar.

Prince Siddhartha Gautama finds the path to enlightenment. He becomes Buddha.

Jainism is established in northern India by Prince Mahavira.

After expanding the Magadha region, Ajatashatru dies.
