Settlers arrive in Ireland thanks to the land bridge that existed between Ireland and Scotland.

Agriculture begins in Ireland. People begin keeping livestock and farming crops.

The Neolithic tribes build a complex of tombs, enclosures and standing stones in the Boyne Valley.

Metal is discovered and soon the inhabitants are making objects of bronze and gold. They made axe heads, jewelry and pottery.

More immigrants arrive in Ireland and bring skills to create even more artifacts and weapons. Some people live in dwellings called crannogs, which are false islands made in the center of lakes.

Celts arrive from central Europe and quickly dominate the island.

The Iron Age begins in Ireland. Celtic culture exerts itself in language and art.

The Celts were not unified politically. Ireland was divided into 150 tiny kingdoms that were known as tuaths. Each tuath was ruled by a minor king, who was then subject to a more powerful king who ruled a group of tuaths. These kings were subject in turn to one of five provincial kings. Power shifted constantly. Ireland had a simple economy based on agriculture. Instead of money, cows were the unit of exchange. Towns did not exist, but social classes did.
