Assigned to the USS Wyoming out of Norfolk, Virginia.

Assigned to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Elected governor of Georgia, defeats former Republican governor Carl Sanders

Inaugurated as governor of Georgia.

The Georgia Assembly passes Jimmy Carter's state government reorganization bill.

Represents the New South politics and gains national attention on the Time magazine cover.

Fails to become running mate of George McGovern at the Democratic National Convention in Miami.

Becomes National Campaign Chairman for the Democratic National Committee for congressional elections.
New York governor Nelson Rockefeller recommends Carter for the Trilateral Commission for the North American, European and Japanese dialogue.

Announces his candidacy for President of the United States.

Carter's governorship ends, the law of Georgia don't allow a second term.

Wins the Iowa, New Hampshire, Illinois, Florida, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio Democratic caucuses and primaries. Loses the Massachusetts and California primaries.

Becomes president candidate at the Democratic Convention in New York City. Walter Mondale running mate.
