- 1943 | John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts to Joseph P. Kennedy, Senior and his wife Rose. John was the Kennedys' second son. From the start, his health suffered. His mother noted he had whooping cough, chicken pox and measles in early childhood.
Kennedy graduated from the Choate School. In his yearbook it was declared Most likely to become President.
John Kennedy finished his senior thesis at Harvard University, which he called Appeasement in Munich. He graduated cum laude with a degree in international affairs. After graduation, he published his thesis retitled as Why England Slept and saw it rise to bestseller.
Rejected by the US Army for health reasons, Kennedy joined the Navy with his father's assistance. He became a junior naval officer and worked with the Secretary of the Navy. He was assigned to the Pacific theater and earned the rank of lieutenant.
Kennedy commanded a patrol torpedo boat in the Solomon Islands, PT-109, when it was rammed by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. Despite serious back injuries, Kennedy helped his injured crew to safety and received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his bravery. | John F Kennedy Timeline 1 2 3
