Kennedy established the Peace Corps. The Bay of Pigs Invasion occurred in April. It failed miserably. Cuba captured many of the survivors, and Kennedy had to negotiate for their release. Kennedy was instrumental in putting America in the space race. His first goal was to land a man on the Moon. He held a summit with Khruschev of the USSR to discuss the cold war, nuclear disarmament and Berlin. He established the Alliance for Progress to establish economic cooperation between North and South America.

Marilyn Monroe sang Happy Birthday to the President in Madison Square Garden. The Cuban Missile Crisis came to a head when Kennedy found out in October that the Soviets were building nine missile sites in Cuba. Kennedy negotiated with Soviet Premier Khruschev for the removal of all installations in exchange for promising not to invade Cuba. See for more details my extended Cuban Missile Crisisafter this Kennedy Timeline.

Kennedy tried to distance himself from the Civil Rights movement at first, because Congress was dominated by Southern Democrats. When Alabama Governor George Wallace blocked two African Americans from enrolling at the University of Alabama, Kennedy gave his famous civil rights speech on television and radio. He proposed what would become the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Kennedy traveled to Berlin and gave his famous speech containing the phrase: Ich bin ein Berliner. He was instrumental in getting the USSR to sign the Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapon Tests in the Atmosphere, In Outer Space and Under Water, also known as the partial Test Ban Treaty.

Kennedy's younger son, Patrick was born. He died two days later.

President John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas at 12:30 pm. He was declared dead at 1:00 pm. Cause of death was two shots to the head and neck.
