Publishes Following the Equator which is based on his world tour.

Has a private audience with Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria-Hungary. Meets Booker T. Washington.

Receives an honorary Doctor of Letters from Yale University. Serves as Vice-President for Anti-Imperialist League for the next 9 years. Publishes To the Person Sitting in Darkness. Writes The United States of Lyncherdom.

Receives an honorary degree from the University of Missouri. His wife, Livy, becomes ill.

Sells his Hartford house to the Bissell family.

Wife Livy dies in Florence, Italy.

Mark Twain dies at age 74 on April 21, the day after Halley's Comet passes by.
