He contracts scarlet fever. Afterwards, he returns to Barcelona and moves to Horta d'Ebre when he is invited by his friend, Manuel Pallares.

Picasso returns again to Barcelona, hanging out in the Quatre Gats tavern, a gathering place for avant-garde artists. He becomes part of a community of modernist artists, writers and poets, including Carlos Casagemas.

Picasso has his first individual exhibition at the Quatre Gats. He makes his first visit to Paris with his friend Casagemas, where his painting "Last Moments" is entered for exhibition at the Universal Exhibition. He meets his first art dealer and has is first contact with the owner of a Paris art gallery.

Picasso moves to Madrid. His friend, Casagemas, commits suicide in Paris. Picasso begins his Blue Period, which is mostly monochromatic and feature subjects that are rather moody. He founded an art magazine called Arte Joven with Francesc d'Assis Soler. The magazine ran for five editions. He traveled to Barcelona and back to Paris.
