The Catalina 30 is designed by Frank Butler.

The J-24 is presented by Rodney Johnstone and the Toulon dockyard in France constructs the Phocea, world's largest sailing yacht till 2004.

The Freedom 40 is launched by Gary Hoyt.

The Tartan Ten is introduced by Sparkman en Stephens.

The Sonar is designed Bruce Kirby.

The Irish national sail training vessel Asgard II is launched.

Zygmunt Choren designs the three masted sailing boat the Dar Mlodziezy for the Polish Navy.

Australia wins the America Cup for the first time in sailboat history. The J-35 is designed by Rodney Johnstone.

Zygmunt Choren designes the Wind Star built by the Gdansk and Merwede shipyards.

The US wins the the America Cup.

Sumitomo Heavy Industries constructs the four masted barque Japanese training tall ship Kaiwo Maru II.

Hobie Cat creates the twin sail trimaran TriFoiler.

Three masted French luxury yacht Le Ponant launched. On April 4 2008, Somalian pirates seize Le Ponant in the Gulf of Aden. All hostages were released April 12.

The steel-hulled five masted full-rigged tall cruise ship Royal Clipper is constructed by Zygmunt Choren. According to the Guinness World Records book the Preussen is the largest square rigged ship. The three mast full-rigged clipper Stad Amsterdam is built by Gerard Dijkstra in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Switzerland wins the America Cup. The largest single-masted yacht ever is built for entrepeneur Joe Vittoria: the sloop-rigged super sail yacht Mirabella V.

Royal Huisman Shipyard the clipper-bowed three masted gaff-rigged luxury sailing yacht Athena. The largest yacht in sailboat history.

Two of the largest private sailing yachts in the world are built. The Eos, a three masted Bermuda rigged schooner at the German Lürssen yard and the Maltese Falcon clipper for American entrepeneur Tom Perkins.
