July 17 Zahir Shah is deposed in a military coup by former Prime Minister Mohammed Daoud Khan and the Marxist People's Democratic Party. Mohammed Daoud Khan abolishes the monarchy, and declares himself President of the Republic of Afghanistan.

June Conservative Islamic leaders form the Mujahideen guerrilla movement to battle the new government. July Uprising in Nuristan. February 14 U.S. Ambassador Adolph Dubs is killed. Power struggle between Nur Mohammed Taraki and Hafizullah Amin. September 14 Taraki is murdered by supporters of Prime Minister Hafizullah Amin. Amin President. December 24 The U.S.S.R. army invades Afghanistan. December 27 Amin is executed. Sovjets install Babrak Karmal as Prime Minister.
Mujahideen rebels unite against the Soviet forces.
More than 4 million Afghans flee to Pakistan and Iran. Mujahideen rebels control rural areas, the Sovjet forces urban areas.
Osama bin Laden helps the Mujahideen rebels. The U.N. investigates human rights violations in Afghanistan. U.S. and other countries provide military and logistical assistance.
Sovjet-leader Gorbachev states he will withdraw his troops. May Mujahideen groups form alliance in Pakistan to fight the Soviet forces.
