American astrophysicist Raymond Davis detects and counts solar neutrinos in the Homestake or Davis Experiment with a special telescopic divice. The Special Astrophysical Observatory is constructed in the U.S.S.R. in the Bolshoi Zelenchuk Valley of the Greater Caucasus. Start of the construction of a 12 telescope complex at Mauna Kea Observatories on the Big Island in Hawaii. Kitt Peak National Observatory is completed at the Quinlan Mountains in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert. The Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory opens a complex of astronomical telescopes and instruments near La Serena in Chile. The 6-meter Bolshoi Teleskop Azimultal'nyi is completed in the Zelenchuk Valley in the U.S.S.R. International observatories are built on the Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma at the Spanish Canary Islands. The 10-meter Whipple is built by the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory at Mount Hopkins in Arizona. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory builds the Very Large Array telescopes near Soccoro in New Mexico, U.S. The Multiple Magnum Mirror Telescope is constructed at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Arizona. The William Herschel Telescope is completed at the Spain Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. The European Southern Observatory builds its New Technology Telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile. First large space based 2.4-meter Cassegrainian reflector, the Hubble Space Telescope is launched. The 10-meter Keck 1 reflector at the Mauna Kea Observatories at Hawaii is completed. The U.S. National Radio Astronomy Observatory completes the Very Long Baseline Array of ten radio telescopes controlled by the Array Operations Center in Socorro.
