American astrophysicist Raymond Davis detects and counts solar neutrinos in the Homestake or Davis Experiment with a special telescopic divice.

The Special Astrophysical Observatory is constructed in the U.S.S.R. in the Bolshoi Zelenchuk Valley of the Greater Caucasus.

Start of the construction of a 12 telescope complex at Mauna Kea Observatories on the Big Island in Hawaii.

Kitt Peak National Observatory is completed at the Quinlan Mountains in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert.

The Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory opens a complex of astronomical telescopes and instruments near La Serena in Chile.

The 6-meter Bolshoi Teleskop Azimultal'nyi is completed in the Zelenchuk Valley in the U.S.S.R.
