The Royal Observatory in Edinburgh in Scotland is established.

American scientist John William Draper takes the first photograph of the Moon.

Harvard College Observatory is established in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.

William Parsons builds a huge 72 -inch reflecting telescope at Birr Castle in Ireland, the largest astronomical device until 1917.

German physicist Carl August von Steinheil constructs builds refractor and reflector telescopes with silver-covered mirrors based on the technique of German chemist Justus von Liebig.

French physicist Léon Foucault develops the Foucault Test to determine the shape of reflecting telescopes.
