German astrologerJohannes Kepler comes up with the idea of a refracting astronomical telescope made of two convex lenses in his works Dioptrice, Catoptrics and Astronomiae Pars Optica. Also known as the Keplerian telescope.
Portugese use of a telescope in the Battle of Guaxanduba between Portugese and French forces. English sea captain John Saris gives a telescope to Japanese official Matsura Hoin on the first voyage to Japan for seeking trade.
German Jesuit father Christoph Scheiner builds the modern terrestrial astronomical telescope based on the theory of Kepler. Italian Jesuit physicist Niccolo Zucchi builds the concave reflecting telescope.
