Travels to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) as a correspondent for Sacramento's Alta Californian. Reports on the shipwreck of the Hornet. Gives his first public lecture.

Is arrested for disorderly conduct in New York City and has to spend a night in jail. Travels to Europe and the Holy Land as a correspondent for a newspaper. Meets Olivia Langdon in New York City and attends a reading by Charles Dickens with her and her family. Publishes The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Other Stories but sales are low. Travels to San Francisco.

Travels to Hartford, Connecticut to meet with The American Publishing Company. Meets Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Becomes formally engaged to Olivia Langdon. Publishes a collection of travel letters from his European travels called The Innocents Abroad. It is a success. Meets Frederick Douglass.
