First light emitting diodes for wrist watches are invented. U.S. astronaut Scott Carpenter uses a Cosmonaute Navitimer chronograph aboard the Aurora 7 space capsule. Swiss manufacturer ETA invents the first quartz battery operated watch. First scratch proof watch, the Diastar, by Rado. Rolex presents its Cosmograph Daytona.
