Born in Florence Italy on March 9, son of a notary.

Begins work at the Paris embassy with Guido Antonio Vespucci, an ambassador from Florence to King Louis XI of France.

Is appointed to the position of steward in the home of Lorenzo de Medici, ruler of Florence.

While working for the de Medici family, Amerigo is sent to Seville, Spain. He learns of the voyages taking place to explore the world in order to find a northwest passage to the Indies.

Embarks on his maiden voyage on May 10 after gaining permission from King Ferdinand to make a voyage of discovery. While it is not known for certain, it is reputed that he landed on the coast of America, which was assumed to be Asia. There is some controversy over whether or not Amerigo actually discovered what he claimed. The letters he wrote listed distances and positions that were difficult if not impossible to attain in the time described. He was a seasoned navigator, however, so the truth is lost in the mists of time. Amerigo, unlike his predecessor Columbus, actually realized that they had discovered an entirely new land. It is thought that this voyage reached Central America, along the Gulf of Mexico and then arrived at Bermuda.
