The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, on how populations split off into separate species, is published. Darwin's opponents are shocked.
February 6th edition of Origin of Species is published. February 13 - March 21 Stays Devonshire St., London. The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is published.
2nd edition of Descent of Man is published.
Insectivorous Plants is published. Provides the Royal Commission on Subjecting Live Animals to Experiments with evidence.
Wirites autobiographical memoir Francis Darwin’s Life and Letters of Charles Darwin, published in 1887. The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom is published. September First grandchild, Bernard Darwin, is born to Francis and Amy Darwin, but Amy dies in childbirth. Francis becomes secretary and botanical assistant of Darwin.
Gets a Honorary LLD Doctorate of Law from Cambridge University. The Different Forms of Flowers on Plants of the same Species and A Biographical Sketch of an Infant are published.
Samuel Butler accuses Darwin of plagiarism.
The Power of Movement in Plants, Assisted by Francis Darwin is published.
August Brother Erasmus dies. The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms With Observations on Their Habits is published, based on the 1840 paper. Defends the right of scientists to experiment on live animals.
April 19 Charles Darwin dies in Downe, aged seventy-three. He was given a state funeral and is buried in Westminster Abbey on April 26.
