Naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace sends Charles an essay on evolution through natural selection based on a theory that is nearly identical to Charles'. June 28 Baby Charles dies of fever. June Darwin and Wallace’s theories of evolution through natural selection are presented by Charles Lyell and Joseph Hooker at the Linnean Society of London. The response is very muted. July - March 1859 Darwin writes On the Origin of Species.
November On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life is published by John Murray. The book provokes great controversy.
January 2nd foreign editions of Origin are published. Bishop Samuel Wilberforce attacks Darwin’s theory and scientists Thomas Huxley and Joseph Hookerat support the theory at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford University.
