Because the government is opposed to females working in government offices. She is downgraded to copyist.

Returns to Massachusetts.

Returns to the U. S. Patent Office as a copyist, after President Abraham Lincoln is elected.

Following the First Battle of Bull Run or First Manassas near Manassas Junction in Virginia, Clara nurses soldiers and founds an agency for medical supply. She is called the Angel of the Battlefield.

Travels behind the front lines and nurses soldiers of the North and South during the battles of Petersburg and Richmond.

United States of America Union Major General Benjamin Butler of the Army of the James appoints Clara Barton to be Lady in Charge.

President Abraham Lincoln gives Barton the responsibility to find Union soldiers missing in action. Her bureau locates information on 30,000 men.

Takes a break in Switzerland on doctors advice.

Involved with the International Red Cross during and after the Franco-German War.

Organizes aid during the yellow fever epidemic outbreak in Florida.

Founded the American Red Cross and serves as the first President.
