Finds work as an itinerant printer, working in St. Louis, New York City and Philadelphia. Corresponds as a journalist for Iowa's Muscatine Journal while he is in Philadelphia.

Writes for his brother Orion's Ben Franklin Book and Job Office, located in Keokuk, Iowa.

Gives his first public speech at a printer's banquet given in Keokuk, Iowa.

Apprentices as a cub riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River with Horace Bixby.

Has a vision of his brother, Henry in a coffin. A few days later, Henry dies due to injuries sustained in an explosion on the riverboat Pennsylvania.

Earns his steamboat pilot license. He works steadily as a river pilot on the Mississippi River, running between St. Louis and New Orleans.

Piloting career comes to an end when the Mississippi River is closed due to the outbreak of the Civil War. Joins a band of Confederate irregulars and stays with them for a couple of weeks before deserting. Brother Orion, is appointed Secretary to the Nevada Territory. Samuel goes with him by stagecoach to Virginia City.
