The Winter Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is the stage for Nintendo's debut of the Advanced Video System (AVS) video game system. It comes with a keyboard, a music keyboard, wireless controllers, tape storage and a Zapper gun. Game distributors are not interested. Nintendo issues a recalls all Famicom systems in Japan to fix a bug that causes the game system to freeze up. In June, a small tabletop version of the game Donkey Kong appears on the market. At the Summer Consumer Electronics Show, the AVS system again fails to attract distributors.

In January, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is introduced at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show. It is the American version of the Famicom. Nintendo wins Best Video Game for Punch-Out. The NES does not impress distributors at the Summer Consumer Electronics Show.
In October the NES is officially released in the US. It sells for $125 and comes with the Robotic Operating Buddy and the Zapper light gun. Seventeen game cartridges are available at launch. Super Mario Bros for the NES is released, as is a baseball game and the 10-Yard Fight and Ice Climber. 90,000 NES systems are sold in New York during the test marketing. The Famicom game system in Japan sells 6.5 million units in 1985.

Nintendo begins to intensely market the NES in Los Angeles.Nintendo releases a Disk System for the Famicon in Japan. This is a 128 kB disk drive that runs software. Disks can be remade with new games at special vending machines. Legend of Zelda and Dragon Quest are released for the Famicon System in Japan.500,000 of the new Disk Systems for the Famicon system are sold by May.
