Capcom releases several games for the NES including Commando, Ghosts 'n Goblins and 1942. Capcom signs an agreement to produce games for the NES. Donkey Kong 3 is released for the NES. The NES sells 1 million units in 1986 at $199 each.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and Dragon Quest II games are released for the Japanese Famicom. The NES gets Burgertime, Castlevania, Super Pitfall, Metroid, the Legend of Zelda and many more released in the US. The NES sells 4 million units in 1987.

Sony and Nintendo enter into an agreement giving Sony the right to license video games on compact disks for a game system that would be developed by both companies.

The Game Boy portable handheld video game system is introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. It has a monochrome display and sells for $89.95 with a Tetris game. 40,000 Game Boys sell on the first day they are offered in stores in August. Game Boy Color is introduced, stealing the spotlight from the black and white Game Boys. Before long limited editions are issued like Pocket Pikachu. 9.2 million NES have been sold since it was introduced. 1 million Game Boys sell in 1989.

1990 Nintendo owns 80% of the US video game industry and 90% of the worldwide video game industry.
