A playing card company that will eventually become Nintendo is established by Fusajiro Yamauchi.

Yamauchi Nintendo & Company becomes an unlimited partnership. They still make cards.

Nintendo is growing successfully. They become the first company to mass produce plastic playing cards in Japan.

Nintendo signed an agreement with Walt Disney to print cards with Disney characters on them for children. Nintendo is listed on the stock market.

The name of the company changes to Nintendo Co. Ltd. They begin manufacturing games as well as playing cards.

Nintendo introduces the Color TV Game 6 video game system in Japan. It plays six different variations of ball and paddle games.

Nintendo begins making arcade video games that are coin operated.

Nintendo begins shipping coin operated games to the United States. Nintendo opens a subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., in New York. They introduce the Game & Watch, a handheld electronic game system created by Gunpei Yokoi.

Sigeru Miyamoto designs Donkey Kong, basing it on the King Kong and Beauty and the Beast films. Donkey Kong is released. The first US site to host the game was the Spot Tavern in Seattle, Washington. Mario, who grows to be one of the most popular Nintendo characters ever, is introduced as Jumpman. Donkey Kong is shown at the annual Amusement and Music Operators Association convention.

Mario's Bombs Away is released on Nintendo's Game & Watch system.
In July, Nintendo introduces the Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan. This new video game system features 256 x 240 pixel graphics and can display 16 simultaneous colors from a 52 color palette. It is released with Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior and Popeye.
