Picasso begins his sketches for La Vie, an allegorical masterpiece from his Blue Period. He paints one of the characters in the painting to resemble his late friend, Casagemas.

Picasso moves to Paris, finding lodging in Montmartre at 13 Rue de Ravignan. He meets Fernance Olivier, who would become a close companion of Picasso's until 1912.

The beginning of Picasso's Rose Period. In contrast to his Blue Period, he used more cheerful colors and scenes in these paintings. The harlequin, a type of clown figure often depicted wearing checkered clothing, became a frequent subject. He becomes friends with Leo and Gertrude Stein and travels to Holland to visit writer, Tom Schilperrot.

The Steins introduce Picasso to Henri Matisse.

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is the first painting to exhibit Cubism. The painting, an arrangement of five nude women, had originally begun as a brothel scene, but it metamorphosed into the painting we see today, which still elicits a strong response from viewers. He meets Georges Braque, with whom he develops Cubism.
