Lady B, or Wendy Clark, hosts a hip hop show on WHAT 1340 AM in Philadelphia, marking a major move outside of New York for this style of music. She goes on to become one of the first female hip hop artists.
Thanks to the work of his manager, Russell Simmons, Kurtis Blow becomes the first rapper to sign with a major label.

Kurtis Blow earns hip hop's first gold single with the song, The Breaks.
Speed-rapping is introduced in a single called The New Rap Language by Treacherous Three.

The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel is the first album to showcase turntablism.
Magic's Wand by Whodini becomes the first rap music video.
Wild Style is released. This film featured DJs, graf artists, breakdancing and other areas of hip hop culture.

In The Message, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five stop making songs about partying and focus on inner-city poverty.
The Beastie Boys change from punk to rap.
Old School hip hop begins to fade as the New School becomes more popular with its hard, aggressive lyrics and heavy metal influences.
Run DMC becomes the first rap group to get consistent airplay on both Top 40 radio stations and on MTV.
