- 1990 | Two films are released from Hollywood about hip hop: Breakin and Beat Street.
LL Cool J, just 16, releases his first album Radio. It is the first album released by Def Jam, and up and coming rap label.
Run DMC's third albumRaising Hell goes multi-platinum, becoming rap's first album to do so. The Beastie Boys' debut album Licensed to Ill becomes the best selling rap album of the decade.
Rap gets its own category at the Grammy Awards. DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince win, but since the category is not televised, most boycott the Grammys and party on MTV instead. Queen Latifah debuts with her album, All Hail the Queen. MC Hammer hits the pinnacle of his career with the song U Can't Touch This.
Will Smith, better known as the Fresh Prince, gets his own sitcom called The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Salt-N-Pepa's album, Blacks Magic is released, getting them the best reviews of their career.
