Ice Cube stars in the film "Boyz N the Hood" to critical acclaim.

Vice President Dan Quayle calls for the ban of an album by 2Pac Shakur due to lyrics regarding police officers. Ice-T's new group, Body Count, is also hit up for the song Cop Killa when its lyrics incite controversy.

Other artists call for a boycott against gangsta-rap artists like Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dog and 2Pac because their lyrics are misogynistic and violent.

Rap violence continues to escalate: 2Pac is shot days after being found guilty of sexual assault; Tha Dogg Pound are shot at during filming of a video; the feud between East and West coast rappers grows; Snoop Doggy Dogg is acquitted of second-degree murder.

2Pac Shakur is shot when leaving a Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas. He dies a week later in the hospital.

The Notorious B.I.G. is murdered in a drive-by shooting only six months after 2Pac's murder. His second album, released only a few days later, and ironically titled Life After Death becomes the best selling rap album of all time.
