Timeline of rap history that has its roots in the South Bronx area of New York City with the development of rhythm-and-blues R&B rhythmic vocals in the mid-1970s.

Bronx DJ, Kool Herc - also known as Clive Campbell, an immigrant from Jamaica - develops a new technique of deejaying in which he would cut two of the same records, extending the instrumental break.
Singer James Brown releases the song The Big Payback which features spoken vocals and emphasizes the groove over the melody.

A Manhattan DJ known as DJ Hollywood begins speaking rhymes over the top of popular disco songs at the clubs he works in. There is a bit of controversy whether he came up with the term hip hop or if his partner, Lovebug Starski, was the author.

The Four Elementsof hip hop are created. They include deejaying, breaking, emceeing and graf artists. These elements were set down by a DJ called Afrika Bambaataa.

Breakdancing appears on the scene. It is performed by b-boys or break-boys during the instrumental breaks in the music.
Scratching, the sliding of a record beneath the needle of the phonograph, is discovered by thirteen-year-old Grand Wizard Theodore, and becomes a new technique for hip hop DJs.
