The Battle of Plassey is fought, with the British defeating Siraj-ud-daulah.

The British Empire expands to Bengal and Bihar.

Ten million people in Bengal die of famine. The East India Company does nothing.

The governor of Bengal, Warren Hastings, establishes an opium monopoly. The Regulating Act is passed by the British.

Telegraph, postal and railway service begins in India.

The First War of Indian Independence, also known as the Revolt of 1857 and the Sepoy Mutiny.

The British Crown officially takes control of the Indian Government.

The Queen of England is declared the Empress of India.

Indian National Congress is formed.

Mahatma Gandhi heads an anti-British civil disobedience campaign.

The Quit India movement begins.

India's first atomic bomb is exploded at Pokhran.

India sends soldiers to Sri Lanka for a peacekeeping mission. Goa becomes the 25th state of India.
