An English chemist named Humphry Davy creates the first electric light by connecting two wires to a battery with a charcoal strip between the ends of the wires. The carbon glowed when the circuit was completed, creating an arc lamp.

Warren de la Rue used a platinum coil enclosed in an evacuated tube to carry an electric current. The lamp worked well but the cost of platinum made this impractical.

James Bowman Lindsay used a prototype lightbulb to demonstrate a constant electric lighting system.

Edward Shepard creates an electrical incandescent arc lamp that uses a filament made of charcoal.
Joseph Wilson Swan creates carbonized paper filaments.

A German watchmaker named Heinrich Gobel makes the first true lightbulb using a carbonized bamboo filament inside a bulb of glass.

Joseph Wilson Swan gets a patent in the UK for a partial vacuum carbon filament lamp.
