Space Invaders hit the market and was an instant success. It was the first arcade game to track and display high scores.
Atari introduced the trackball with its new arcade football game.

Atari released Asteroids, which was the first arcade game to allow high scorers to add their initials to their score.
Mattel released Intellivision, which also converts into a small computer. With an adaptor, it also played Atari games. Atari sued for patent infringement and lost.
Four former employees of Atari formed Activision. This was the first company to make games for other consoles.

Pac-man is released and instantly became one of the most popular games. Namco, its creator, released 300,000 copies.

Nintendo made a splash with Donkey Kong, a game that introduced the character, Mario. The game's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, would go on to become one of the most prolific game designers ever.
The first video game magazine, Electronic Games made its debut.
