- 1996 | Nintendo released the GameBoy handheld system, Sega introduced the Genesis system, NEC Home Entertainment came out with the TurboGrafix-16, and Atari created the Lynx, the first color handheld video game system. Nintendo released Super Mario Land for the GameBoy. Other games released that year include Sim City, which was the first in the ever popular Sim series, and Populous.
Sonic the Hedgehog made his debut with Sega. Nintendo released the Super NES in the United States. One of the most popular new titles was Final Fantasy II, with Super Mario Kart following in 1992.
Thanks to a Senate investigation into video game violence, the Entertainment Software Rating Board is established to rate games for age appropriateness. Sony introduced the Playstation game console in Japan, which features a 32-bit processor and higher graphics resolution. Sales of PC video games increased dramatically.
Nintendo launched the Nintendo 64 and released a couple of new Mario titles. The new console had a 64-bit processor, 64-bit graphics and a sound coprocessor.
