The Louisiana area is bought from France. The Corps of Discovery's Transcontinental Expedition leaded by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark reach the Missouri River.

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark enter the Washington state region, Fort Clatsop is their winter encampment south of the Columbia River.

David Thompson creates the first map of the Columbia River.

Spokane House and Fort Astoria are built by fur traders, among them John Jacob Astor. The Columbia River is mapped from its headwaters by David Thompson.

The Anglo-American War of 1812, ends in 1815.

The United States and Great Britain decide to occupate the Oregon Territory together, after Spain cedes its claims to that region to the US.

Fort Vancouver is found by the Judson Bay Company.

President James Monroe proclaimes his Monroe Doctrine to warn other countries to not interfere or occupate U S teritory.

The Office of Indian Affairs - now Bureau of Indian Affairs - is founded.

The Hudson's Bay Company founds Fort Colville and Fort Vancouver.

The Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development is established.

Missionary Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa found a mission in southeastern Washington state. The Oregon Trail migration route from the Missouri River to the Oregon Country is created.
