The Vampyre by John Polidori is published in the New Monthly.

In Paris, Lord Ruthwen ou Les Vampires by Cyprien Berard is published anonymously. Le Vampire, a play by Charles Nodier, opens at the Theatre de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris. An English translation, The Vampire, or The Bride of the Isles opens in London.

Another opera, Der Vampyr opens in Liepsig. It is written by Heinrich Marschner.

Tolstoy publishes Upyr in Paris.

Varney the Vampire begins to be serialized. Bram Stoker is born.

Theodosia Goodman, later known as the actress Theda Bara, is born.

The Flowering of the Strange Orchid by H. G. Wells is published. This proves to be an early precursor to science fiction vampire stories.
